Is It Soccer or Football?

There have been so many debates on names for the sports soccer and/or football. Some insisted that it is football while others strongly opposed that the sport is called soccer. Even I was once in a debate with my husband who is a football enthusiast and was once a football player during his younger days. I told him it was soccer then a heated debate followed.

At a quick glance, we can tell that both sports are the same. Both are very popular that are played worldwide and surely will continuously gain tremendous popularity in the many following generation. Also, the fields of both sports are quite similar. The difference I must say would be the rules and the origins. When you say soccer, it is widely identified as a sport that is primarily played with feet to score a goal and touching the ball is considered a foul. While in other forms of football like American football and rugby, holding the ball is a huge part of the game.

Although many have been debating on names, football is generally a name to whichever form of sports that involve a ball and require footwork. To name a few of the football sports I know are American Football that is quite similar to a form of football that is born out soccer called Rugby and the most popular and is the first football sport introduced here in our country Philippines, Association Football or commonly called “soccer” or simply “football”.
